Celtic captain Scott Brown ended speculation over a move abroad by announcing Thursday he had signed a two-year contract extension with the Scottish champions.

The 33-year-old midfielder is now set to stay at Parkhead until 2021, meaning the former Scotland skipper will have spent 14 years with the Glasgow giants.

Brown, who recently made his 500th appearance for the Hoops, was a target for Australian club Western Melbourne ahead of their debut season in the A-League.

He was also reported to have turned down a lucrative move to Dubai, with clubs in the United States interested in his services as well.

But Brown has decided to stay with Celtic, having joined from Scottish rivals Hibernian for £4.4 million ($5.7 million, five million euros) when the Hoops' manager was Gordon Strachan.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have signed this new contract extension," Brown told Celtic's website.

"Celtic has been such an important part of my life for a long time now, since I joined the club back in 2007, and this really is home for me.

"My focus, as always, will be on doing everything I can to deliver more success to this club in the months and year ahead, and in particular for our wonderful fans, who have given me amazing support from the moment I first pulled on the Hoops."
