Basham sinks Leeds to boost Blades' promotion bid

Chris Basham boosted Sheffield United's bid to reach the Premier League as his late goal clinched a vital 1-0 win over Championship promotion rivals Leeds on Saturday.

Basham struck deep into the second half at Elland Road to lift Chris Wilder's side above Leeds into second place in the Championship.

The Blades are one point ahead of Leeds with both teams having eight games left, while leaders Norwich sit one point clear of second place before their trip to Rotherham later on Saturday.

Leeds had only themselves to blame after wasting several good opportunities to beat their Yorkshire rivals for the second time this season.

Tyler Roberts smacked the outside of the post for Marcelo Bielsa's team, but a 71st minute error by Leeds captain Liam Cooper allowed Billy Sharp to set up Basham to score from the edge of the area.

Leeds defender Pontus Jansson had described the match as the biggest of his life and he went closest to equalising after moving up front in the closing stages.

But Jansson ended the match in goal after Kiko Casilla was sent off for bringing down Sharp in stoppage-time and it was the visitors who were celebrating wildly at the final whistle.
