Norwich City gave their chances of automatic promotion to the Premier League a big boost on Saturday after beating struggling Rotherham 2-1 to move four points clear at the top of the Championship.

Daniel Farke's side are on a run of six straight wins thanks to Ben Godfrey's 57th-minute winner, which extends their lead at the top thanks to Leed United's 1-0 home defeat to promotion rivals Sheffield United.

The Canaries had to survive a scare at Rotherham -- who are third from bottom -- however, as Semi Ajayi cancelled out Kenny McLean's opener for the visitors.

Norwich are four ahead of Sheffield United, who moved second thanks to Chris Basham's second half winner that clinched a vital 1-0 win over Leeds.

Basham struck in the 71st minute of a huge Yorkshire derby Elland Road to lift Chris Wilder's side one point ahead of Leeds with eight games left.

Hosts Leeds had only themselves to blame in the weekend's biggest game after wasting several good opportunities to beat their county rivals for the second time this season.

Tyler Roberts smacked the outside of the post for Marcelo Bielsa's team, but Leeds captain Liam Cooper's error allowed Billy Sharp to set up Basham to score the decisive goal from the edge of the area.

But Jansson ended the match in goal after Kiko Casilla was sent off for bringing down Sharp in stoppage-time and it was the visitors who were celebrating wildly at the final whistle.

Managerless West Brom remain in pursuit of the top three, winning 1-0 at Brentford thanks to a goal from Kyle Edwards six minutes after half-time.

Pressure is mounting on Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis, despite his side being fifth and in the play-off hunt, as they were thumped 3-0 at sixth-placed Aston Villa.

Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn gave Villa a commanding half-time lead before Albert Adomah added a late third to seal the points.

Preston are level on points with Villa, just outside the play-off places after Sean Maguire fired home the only goal in 1-0 win over Birmingham in stoppage time.

Steve Bruce's Sheffield Wednesday are also firmly in the play-off equation thanks to a 4-2 victory at home to Blackburn which maintained their manager's unbeaten start to his reign.

Wigan improved their chances of avoiding relegation with a 5-2 win against second-from-bottom Bolton.

Elsewhere, Hull blew a two-goal lead in their 2-2 draw with QPR.

Stoke and Reading drew 0-0, while bottom side Ipswich drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest
