MLS sets playoff format and more regular-season matches

Major League Soccer revealed its playoff format for the coronavirus-disrupted 2020 campaign on Friday as well as plans for three more matches per club before the end of September.

The North American league shut down in March after only two matches per team, added a few more during the MLS Is Back Tournament at Orlando and resumed regular-season play in August.

Teams are following health and safety regulations in markets and playing in home stadiums with regular COVID-19 testing of players, coaches and staff.

A total of 18 teams will qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs. While no match dates were revealed, the championship final remains set for December 12.

All rounds will be single matches at the home of the higher-seeded club in a bracket format, with eight teams qualifying from the 12-team Western Conference and 10 teams advancing from the 14-team Eastern Conference.

East seeds seven and 10 as well as eight and nine will meet in play-in matches to determine the last two spots in the East knockout rounds. The lowest-seeded advancing team will face the East top seed while the other play-in club meets the two seed.

Among three more regular-season matches announced for September 18-27 will be those for Canadian clubs all being played in US venues. Until now, Canadian teams had only played each other due to US-Canada travel issues.

Montreal will play a home match at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, while Vancouver will play a home match at Portland and Toronto FC will play a home match in Hartford, Connecticut.

Columbus owns the best record in MLS at 7-1 with two drawn for 23 points, two points ahead of Toronto atop the East. Reigning MLS champion Seattle tops the West on 5-2-3 for 18 points with Minnesota and Kansas city one point adrift.
