Football: Phillips key to QPR's promotion push

QPR assistant manager Kevin Bond believes the form of Matt Phillips will be crucial to his side's bid for promotion to the Premier League.

Harry Redknapp's team moved two points clear at the top of the Championship on Saturday after winger Phillips inspired a 2-0 win at his former club Blackpool.

Phillips, who moved to QPR in pre-season for £5 million ($8.14 million, 5.9 million euros), paid back some of his fee when he opened the scoring in the 61st minute before setting up Charlie Austin to seal the points in the 73rd minute.

Bond was quick to praise the impact of Phillips on a QPR team that has struggled for goals this season.

"Matt did well, his first goal took a deflection but his cross for the second was brilliant," said Bond.

"Charlie Austin hasn't had enough of those chances this season, but the delivery was perfect.

"Blackpool know what Matt has to offer and in the second half he was a big threat.

"He'll be very keen to do well for us in a side that wants to do things this season."

Nigel Pearson rued missed chances as Leicester drew 1-1 against promotion rivals Burnley at the King Power Stadium.

Third placed Leicester dominated the first half and were well worth the lead given them by David Nugent's 14th minute penalty.

But Jamie Vardy missed a great chance to double the lead and Danny Ings levelled two minutes into the second half to give Sean Dyche's second placed side a share of the spoils.

"We missed our chances when we were on top and didn't work hard enough to stop the cross for their goal," Leicester manager Pearson said.

"You look at the game in its entirety and it was a good illustration that you have got to score when you are on top.

"I am not going to complain too much but we just missed that bit of killer instinct."

Burnley boss Dyche was relieved to emerge unscathed from a tricky fixture and he said: "I am pleased with a point.

"In fairness to Leicester they had a very good start and created one or two real good chances and will be aggrieved they didn't put them away.

"I thought we defended resolutely but were not at our best with the ball."

Derby's 2-0 win over Charlton at the Valley kept Steve McClaren's men fourth in the table.

Billy Sharp's goal guided Reading to a 1-0 win at Huddersfield that kept the Royals fifth in the table.

Former England defender Matthew Upson hit an 86th minute winner as Brighton won 1-0 at Middlesbrough.

Blackburn held off Millwall's late surge to claim a 3-2 victory at Ewood Park.

Connor Wickham's 24th minute free-kick gave managerless Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory at Watford.

Barnsley and Yeovil, the division's bottom two sides, fought out a 1-1 draw at Oakwell, while Nottingham Forest were held to a 0-0 draw by Ipswich.

Sixth placed Leeds won 3-0 at Doncaster and Birmingham defeated Bournemouth 2-0.
