Kris Commons says the thought of smashing club records is spurring on his Celtic team-mates this season.

The midfielder scored twice against Motherwell last weekend as the Hoops stretched their unbeaten start to the league campaign to 21 games.

Neil Lennon's side's impressive run includes 18 wins and just three draws with the Parkhead side sitting 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with two games in hand over closest rivals Aberdeen.

The Scottish champions have won their past 10 matches in a row while keeper Fraser Forster has stretched his own clean sheet tally to eight - just two games short of equalling Charlie Shaw's league record from the 1920s.

With European football over for another season and the prospect of a domestic treble gone, Commons claims stopping Celtic's rivals from breaking their unbeaten run is a big factor in their charge to another league title.

"I think it's one of the main motivations just now in the game," the Celtic midfielder said.

"We're going for as many records as we can - the unbeaten run, the clean sheets, everything we can get at the moment.

"Teams are coming knowing if they just score one goal they can bring all that to an end for us so it's big for us to keep it going."

The next team in Celtic's way will be Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday.

Commons has unhappy memories from his last visit but the former Scotland international, who has bagged 19 goals this season, is hoping to continue his impressive scoring streak against Terry Butcher's side.

"I got injured the last time we were there so it would be nice to stay on the pitch for 90 minutes and maybe continue my goalscoring run as well," Commons added.

"And, if I am not scoring, then I want to be the one creating goals for others."

After a good start under new boss Butcher, Hibs have lost their past two matches.

Despite their dip in form Butcher insists his players are looking forward to their encounter with unbeaten Celtic as his side have nothing to lose.

"Every club is striving to beat Celtic this season. We have reached the point where we are asking, 'Who's going to be the first to beat them?'," the Hibs boss said.

"From Celtic's point of view it's a nice pressure. They want teams to come at them so they can then pick them off with the assets they have.

"It's a free go for us."

Butcher was in charge of the Inverness Caledonian Thistle side back in August that came closest to defeating Celtic this season when they raced into a 2-0 lead at Parkhead only for the Hoops to battle back to secure a draw.

Butcher says he takes heart from that result and the narrow 1-0 loss his side suffered at Celtic Park soon after he became Hibs boss.

"It's great when Celtic come to town because you can have a pop at them," the Hibs manager said.

"We play them having lost two games in a row and you could think, 'Blimey, is this the last team we want to face?­­­

"If you don't do that then you will get absolutely smashed."

Elsewhere on Saturday, second placed Aberdeen will aim to get back to winning ways after their loss to Inverness as they travel to take on closest rivals Motherwell at Fir Park.
