Frosinone join fellow minnows Carpi in Serie A

Italian second division side Frosinone earned promotion to Serie A for the first time on Saturday, joining Carpi in Italy's top flight for next season.

Frosinone, based around 50km south of Rome, earned their promotion thanks to a 3-1 win over Crotone in the penultimate match of the season.

Carpi's feat of securing promotion three weeks ago attracted a lot of attention in Italy because the unfashionable team were stuck in the fifth division five years ago.

Frosinone, who traditionally play in blue and yellow, will attract similar attention having been in Italy's Lega Pro, the third division, before winning promotion to Serie B last summer.

Coached by Roberto Stellone, Frosinone hold a six-point lead on Vicenza and Bologna and can no longer be caught by the pair.

A third team will be promoted to Serie A but only following a round of playoffs between the teams who finish between third and eighth place in Serie B.

Parma and Cesena are already relegated from Serie A and Cagliari could suffer the same fate on Sunday.
