Swiss humiliate Ecuador 10-1 in Women's World Cup

Switzerland condemned Ecuador to their second thrashing at the Women's World Cup with a 10-1 defeat in their Group C clash in Vancouver on Friday.

The South American newcomers, already beaten 6-0 by Cameroon in their opening contest, were no match for the Swiss who bounced back with a vengeance from a 1-0 loss to Japan in their opener.

Ecuador's teen defender Angie Ponce scored a hat-trick at the BC Place Stadium, but two of the goals on 24 and 71 minutes were own goals for the opposition.

The 18-year-old nevertheless got her country's first World Cup goal when she converted a 64th-minute penalty awarded after Monica Quinteros was fouled inside the box by Swiss defender Rahel Kiwic.

Switzerland had two hat-tricks -- Fabienne Humm (47, 49, 52) and Ramona Bachman (60, 61, 81) -- with Eseosa Aigbogun (45+2) and Martina Moser (76) also getting on the scoreboard.

In the final round of group games in Winnipeg next Tuesday, Ecuador come up against defending champions Japan with Switzerland playing Cameroon for a place in the last 16.
