Canada draw 1-1 with Netherlands to advance to last 16

A late Kirsten Van De Ven equaliser grabbed a 1-1 draw for the Netherlands against Canada but the hosts still advanced to the last 16 of the Women's World Cup on Monday as group leaders.

Midfielder Ashley Lawrence scored after ten minutes for the hosts but Van De Ven bagged the equaliser with three minutes to go.

The draw sees Canada advance to the knockout round in first place in Group A with five points from three games, with China and the Netherlands having four.

China finish second on goal difference after their 2-2 draw against New Zealand.

The Netherlands could still advance as one of the four best third-place finishers.

New Zealand finish bottom of the table with two points.

As Group A winners they next meet the best third-placed finisher from Group C, D, or E in Vancouver on Sunday.

Canada opened with a 1-0 win over China thanks to a last-gasp Christine Sinclair penalty, but were held to a goalless draw by New Zealand in their second game.
