US brings young talent for Brazil, Mexico friendlies

Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin leads a young United States squad named Sunday for friendlies against Brazil and Mexico that features only four players having 20 or more caps.

The Americans will face Brazil on Friday at East Rutherford, New Jersey and meet arch-rival Mexico in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 11.

Yedlin is the roster leader with 52 caps with Wolfsburg defender John Brooks (33) and strikers Bobby Wood (39) of Hannover 96 and Gyasi Zardes (37) of the Columbus Crew the other voices of experience on a squad with an average age of 23 years 241 days.

"For these matches against Brazil and Mexico, the theme remains the same in that we are using the opportunity against these high-powered opponents to continue building on the foundation that we've laid," US men's national team coach Dave Sarachan said.

"We felt it was right to continue allowing this group to get valuable experience for the big picture that includes competitive matches in the future with the Gold Cup, Olympic qualifying and World Cup qualifying."

Paris Saint-Germain 18-year-old midfielder Tim Weah was the youngest to get the call. He scored for PSG in their 3-0 win over Caen in last month's Ligue 1 opener.

Brooks scored his first goal for his German side against Schalke in a 2-1 victory last month.

Andrija Novakovich from Dutch side Fortuna Sittard with join the veteran forwards while midfielder Julian Green of Germany's Greuther Furth is among the midfielders on the squad.

Others getting the call from European clubs include goalkeeper Ethan Horvath of Belgium's Brugge and defenders Matt Miazga of Nantes, Eric Lichaj of Hull, Cameron Carter-Vickers of Swansea, Shaq Moore of Spain's Reus Deportivo and Antonee Robinson of Wigan.
