Johnson sacked by struggling Hibernian

Lee Johnson was sacked as Hibernian manager on Sunday after the Scottish Premiership club's "disappointing" start to the season.

Johnson departed less than 24 hours after Saturday's 3-2 home defeat against Livingston condemned Hibernian to a third successive league defeat.

"The club has taken the tough decision to relieve Lee Johnson of his duties following a disappointing start to the domestic campaign," Hibernian chief executive Ben Kensell said.

"We wish Lee and his coaching staff all the best for the future and thank them for their efforts."

Former Bristol City and Sunderland boss Johnson took over from Shaun Maloney at Hibs in May 2022.

The Edinburgh side finished fifth last season but have lost five of their nine games in all competitions this term.

Johnson's exit comes ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Aston Villa.

Hibernian suffered a chastening 5-0 defeat against the Premier League side in Thursday's first leg.

Former Hibs skipper David Gray will take caretaker charge for the "immediate future", supported by Stuart Garden.
