Football: Wanderers score five to top group in ACL

Australia's Western Sydney Wanderers routed China's Guizhou Renhe 5-0 to finish top of Group H and reach the second round in their first AFC Champions League campaign on Tuesday.

It was the biggest win in the ACL by an Australian side.

Shannon Cole put the Wanderers ahead in the sixth minute with a mid-air volley but they failed to score again until a rush of goals late in the second half.

Those four goals came in 13 minutes, with Labinot Haliti seizing on a poor back pass to the goalkeeper and Aaron Mooy converting a penalty after Michael Beauchamp had his jersey tugged by Guo Sheng.

Japanese superstar Shinji Ono lit up Parramatta Stadium with an unstoppable volley from outside the goal area, and defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley had a free header off a corner to complete the scoring.

"It's a fantastic feeling and to do it in that manner as well, five goals, after we lost the first game in the group," said Wanderers coach Tony Popovic.

"It was an uphill battle but the players have shown a lot of belief to finish top of the group.

"In the end goals change games and once we got the third goal you could see that the players relaxed, and it could have been anything after that."

The Wanderers were joined in the last 16 by Japan's Kawasaki Frontale, who downed Ulsan Hyundai 3-1 to reach the knockout stages.

Goals from Yu Kobayashi, Yoshito Okubo and Jeci, against Rafinha's lone strike for the visitors, were enough to take the J-League side through.

Western Sydney will meet the Group F runners-up in the last 16, while Kawasaki will play the Group F winners.

Tuesday's match proved a bridge too far for Guizhou Renhe, who battled through five games in just 15 days -- forcing coach Gong Lei to bring a less experienced side Down Under.

"We have just 14 players here, most of them are young players who don't have enough professional appearances," Gong said.
