Galaxy's Keane named MLS MVP

Los Angeles Galaxy forward Robbie Keane was named Major League Soccer's 2014 Most Valuable Player on Wednesday, days before his team's Sunday showdown with New England for the MLS Cup crown.

The Ireland international, in his fourth season with the Galaxy, recorded 19 goals and was credited with 14 assists in 29 regular-season matches.

Keane, 34, finished ahead of the Seattle Sounders' Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins and the New England Revolution's Vietnamese-American midfielder Lee Nguyen for the league's highest individual honor.

The award is voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular-season performance.

Keane finished with 30.95 percent of club votes, 32.22 percent of media votes and 25.52 percent of player votes, for a weighted total of 88.69.

Martins finished second with a weighted total of 63.22 and Nguyen was third with 57.54.

Since signing with the Galaxy in late 2011, Keane has scored 53 goals in 84 regular-season matches.

He'll captain the Galaxy on Sunday as they host the Revolution in the league's championship match. The Galaxy are trying to become the first team to win five MLS Cup titles, and send US football icon Landon Donovan into retirement a champion.
