Frank Borghi, the United States goalkeeper in the team that recorded an historic 1-0 victory over England at the 1950 World Cup finals, has died aged 89, US Soccer announced Tuesday.

Borghi made nine international appearances from 1949 to 1954, including three World Cup finals matches and five qualifiers.

But his most memorable moment came on July 2, 1950, when he was in goal for the upset of football giants England at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler portrayed Borghi in the 2005 movie "The Game of Their Lives" about the 1950 World Cup campaign.

Borghi and the full 1950 US World Cup team were inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976.

Borghi, a former catcher in the developmental system of Major League Baseball's St. Louis Cardinals, backstopped Simpkins-Ford to the US Open Cup in 1948 and 1950.
