McClaren desperate to escape Championship 'craziness'

Derby manager Steve McClaren is desperate for promotion to the Premier League to escape the "craziness" of the Championship after the leaders were beaten by Leeds on Saturday.

Derby lost 2-0 at Elland Road, while Bournemouth also fell flat, blowing their chance to go top of the second tier after throwing away a 2-0 lead at home to lowly Millwall to draw 2-2.

Ipswich capitalised on the chaos to go second in the table thanks to an injury-time 1-0 win at Charlton.

Derby's lead at the top of the table was cut to one point as their push for a fourth league win in a row was halted by a brace from Leeds' Mirco Antenucci.

"We want to get out of the craziness, but we keep joining in," former England boss McClaren said of the Championship table.

"It's just one of them days, a bad day at the office. We were below our best.

"On another day we could have scored three or four, but we could have been here until midnight and not scored."

This season is Derby's seventh attempt to get back into the Premier League after relegation in 2008.

At Dean Court, goals from Steve Cook and Brett Pitman gave Bournemouth firm control of the match against Millwall at half-time.

However, Millwall pulled one back through Edward Upson in the 75th minute before substitute Magaye Gueye scored two minutes from time to rescue a point.

The draw left Bournemouth, who had been on course to go top, fourth in the table.

"We have to keep some perspective and look at the bigger picture -- we know we are in a good position," said Bournmouth boss Eddie Howe.

"For whatever reason we fell into a bad trap of poor decision-making."

Noel Hunt scored in the second minute of injury time on his debut for Ipswich, snatching a dramatic 1-0 win at Charlton with the last kick of the game.

The Irish international, who joined his brother Stephen at Ipswich by signing on loan from Leeds on Thursday, came on in the 83rd minute and then struck to send his new team into second place.

"They are both good characters, the Hunt 'sisters'," joked Mick McCarthy, the Ipswich boss.

"Noel's as infectious as his brother and if we get to love him as much as we love Stephen then we'll be doing OK."

Brentford, who were promoted from League One last season, are third thanks to a 4-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton that left them one point off the top.

Middlesbrough would have gone second were it not for Rudy Gestede, who rescued a point for visitors Blackburn five minutes into injury time in a 1-1 draw at the Riverside.

The result left Boro fifth and Rovers sixth, the last play-off spot.

Cardiff claimed a 1-0 win at Watford through an Adam Le Fondre goal to keep both sides just outside the top six.

Bolton's resurgence under new boss Neil Lennon continued with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield, while Reading got a much-needed 2-1 win at Norwich.

Former Cardiff manager Malky Mackay tasted his first defeat as Wigan boss as they were edged out 2-1 by Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Meanwhile 28,802 spectators, the biggest Championship crowd of the day, saw hosts Brighton go down 2-1 to Fulham.

Britt Assombalonga went from hero to villain for Nottingham Forest at Birmingham, levelling in the 84th minute but then giving away the winning penalty and getting sent off as the Blues triumphed 2-1.

Rock-bottom Blackpool drew 1-1 at fellow-strugglers Rotherham.
