Hammers blow as Carroll out for season

West Ham striker Andy Carroll is likely to miss the rest of the season after the Premier League club announced Friday the England international will undergo knee surgery.

The 26-year-old was forced off in West Ham's midweek 0-0 draw at Southampton as Sam Allardyce's side finished the game with only nine men following a red card for goalkeeper Adrian.

West Ham had hoped Carroll would be sidelined for a maximum of six week, but doctors informed them that the club's record signing now requires an operation.

"Andy Carroll will have surgery on his injured knee on Tuesday following assessment by a specialist on Friday afternoon," a brief statement on West Ham's official website read.

"The recovery phase is expected to keep Carroll out for the remainder of the 2014/15 season."

It is another setback for Carroll who missed the start of the season and much of last year with injuries.
