Goals from Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo helped Manchester City end Everton's unbeaten Premier League record with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

City had to come from behind, with Romelu Lukaku breaking the deadlock for Everton in the 16th minute after the hosts misjudged their attempt to play him offside.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart, under scrutiny after twice being beaten at his near post in the 3-1 mid-week loss to Bayern Munich, got a hand to the Belgian's shot, but could not keep it out.

Fortunately, for the goalkeeper and City, his forwards were playing as impressively as the defenders were performing poorly and, within two minutes, the home side were level.

Fernandinho pushed the ball forward for Yaya Toure, who slipped through the perfect, angled pass for Negredo to beat Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard from an angle.

It took until just before the break for City to take the lead that their glut of first-half chances meant they probably merited, although it was a goal with a bizarre build-up.

Negredo clashed with Seamus Coleman following a City attack, with the Everton defender accusing the City man of diving.

As the pair squared up and Everton lost concentration, play continued downfield before City returned the ball forward and David Silva played in Aguero, who made no mistake with a clinical finish from 10 yards.

They were the highlights of an enthralling first half in which Everton looked a constant threat on the counter-attack.

Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov struck the Everton side netting, while a quick free-kick from the visitors ended with the ball finding Lukakau, who was thwarted well by Hart.

James Milner's cross was headed against the woodwork by a defender and a superbly worked City free-kick led to Aguero side-footing just wide from six yards.

City lived dangerously before taking the lead and substitute Matija Nastasic, on for the injured Vincent Kompany, survived a penalty claim after he appeared to push Lukaku in the back.

City made a strong start to the second half, but Hart proved himself to be alert in beating Kevin Mirallas to a through ball as Everton sought an equaliser.

City's defence, unsettled by the loss of Kompany, was not helped when Kolarov was forced off before the hour after suffering a cut face following a push from Steven Naismith that sent him careering into his team-mate Nastasic.

However, they benefited from good fortune to wrap up victory in the 69th minute, when referee Jon Moss ruled that Coleman had brought down Pablo Zabaleta as the City full-back chased onto a Toure pass.

Aguero took a weak resulting penalty, which Howard touched onto his post, only for the rebound to strike the goalkeeper's head and roll over the line.

The third goal took the sting out of the closing stages, although Howard was forced into a pair of near-post blocks to deny Negredo and substitute Samir Nasri.
