Bundesliga laggards Frankfurt name new chairman

Bundesliga stragglers Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday named former German international Fredi Bobic as their new chairman, two days after staving off relegation from Germany's top league.

Bobic, 44, replaces Heribert Bruchhagen, who led the club for 13 years.

The Yugoslav-born former striker's new contract takes effect on June 1 and runs until 2019.

"I am very pleased about the trust that Eintracht Frankfurt's management has put in me," he said.

"Eintracht Frankfurt is a big club. I know that I have big boots to fill from my predecessor Heribert Bruchhagen. I promise to do all I can to bring success to the club."

Bobic earned 37 caps and was part of Germany's triumphant squad at Euro 96.

He played for Bundesliga sides Hertha Berlin, Hannover 96, Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart during his professional career.

His shift to management began in 2009 in Bulgaria before he returned to Germany a year later as sports director at Stuttgart, where he remained until 2014.

Frankfurt held on to their berth in the Bundesliga after Swiss striker Haris Seferovic netted the crucial goal in their 1-0 win on Monday against Nuremberg.
